Guide: getting more from a conversation

Everything on Happn AI works without instructions, but a few habits make conversations noticeably better. This guide collects the ones that come up most often.

Start with a situation, not a greeting

“Hello” gets a hello. “I have just finished a twelve-hour shift and I do not want to think” gets a conversation with somewhere to go. The characters respond to context, so give them one line of it.

Say how you want to be spoken to

Ask for shorter replies, a warmer tone, fewer questions or more detail, and the character keeps that setting for the rest of the thread. This is the single most useful thing most people never try.

Pick the character that fits the mood

The cast is deliberately varied: a patient listener, a precise thinker, a storyteller, a steady daily presence, easy chatter, and sharp banter. Reading two profiles takes a minute and saves an hour of mismatched conversation.

Let a story run over several days

If you are writing fiction together, end each session with a note about where you left off. The characters keep continuity well, and a story that returns to the same thread develops far more than one restarted from scratch.

Set the subjects you would rather avoid

Tell a character a topic is off the table and it stays off. There is no penalty for changing your mind later.

Know what it is not

A character will listen to anything, but it is not qualified help. For health, legal or money questions, and for anything that feels urgent, talk to a person who can act.

Ready when you are

Pick a character and say one true thing

That is all a conversation needs to start. Happn AI keeps the thread, so tomorrow you carry on instead of starting again.
